States of Exception

November 14, 2009 - January 29, 2010

opening reception: Sat., Nov. 14, 6-8 p.m.

With artwork interrogating prison subjugation, torture, and slaughter houses, States of Exception explores Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben’s writings on “bare life” and homo sacer. A large prison cell, an installation of hazmat suits, a video of a pig abattoir in sky scrapers, and a Bombird grace the premises of Centraltrak. This exhibition shows work by two Rotterdam architecture-design firms, Atelier Van Lieshout and MVRDV, an Amsterdam arts think tank, Dadara, and Denton artist Angel Cabrales.

Special recognition and thanks go to Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in Manhattan, the offices of Atelier Van Lieshout and MVRDV in Rotterdam and The Why Factory at the Technical University of Delft.

Disaster Capitalism: A Trade Show for the Future-Present

Disaster Capitalism Art Exhibit Opens January 20, 2009 at the GDAC Visual Arts Center

Dallas, TX (December 30, 2008) – Local multimedia artist Angel Cabrales will be honoring the inauguration of Barack Obama as President of the United States with a new exhibition that takes a satirical look at the last eight years. This fully interactive show will include numerous multimedia exhibits including commercialized waterboards that attendees can use to conduct “enhanced interrogations” of their friends and neighbors, workshops on how to make HAZMAT suits out of duct tape and plastic sheeting, the home edition missile launcher (a one-third scale Patriot missile launcher) and several other politically themed displays. Food will be provided by La Milpa Mexican Restaurant, but attendees will first be required to jump over a miniature border fence before dining.

“Regardless of your political bent, everyone feels that the last eight years have been a particularly trying time for America. By looking back at some of the more controversial moments of the former administration, for example being told to use duct tape and plastic sheeting to protect ourselves from biological or radiological attack or that simulated drowning is not torture, and being able to have fun with them, maybe we can wipe our collective slate clean and look forward to the new administration.”

Disaster Capitalism will be open for one day only at the GDAC Visual Arts Center ( 400 East Hickory St, Denton, TX) on January 20 from 7pm and until 10pm.
